Prayerful Concern for Widows and Women Alone

On the occasion of the eighty-fourth (84) birthday of Grace Curton Green, the Office of the Chancellor of Oxford Graduate School inaugurated Oxford's Widows Watch in her honor. Widowed October 8, 1937, Mrs. Green credits God, her church and Christian friends as the primary source of strength to survive and raise three children.

The names of Christian widows and women alone recommended by those personally involved in the foundation or development of this ministry through education, were recorded in 1984 and prayerfully remembered by the Executive staff of Oxford Graduate School. The official roll for the Widow Watch* was given a place of honor in the Weir Memorial Chapel on Campus at Crystal Springs. The logo flag for the Widow Watch hangs in the Chapel to prompt all who attend to prayer for the needs and care of women alone.

Since the original enrollment of the First One Hundred, who are honored with a plaque in the Chapel, some 300 widows have been added to the watch list. If you know of a Christian widow or Women Alone who needs comfort, prayers, or a friendly voice on the telephone, send her name and address to Oxford Chaplain Edward Nelson, 500 Oxford Drive, Crystal Springs, (DAYTON), TN 37321-6736 or CALL 1-800-933-6188.

Enrolled women are given an 800 number to call for prayer or assistance. Those who wish are given a prayer partner. Prayer for widows has been a part of the chapel program since 1984. Covered-dish fellowship meals are scheduled in different parts of the United States and special campus gathering are planned for Oxford's Widow Watch. At one such gathering, Mrs. Green was asked, "What is the hardest part of being a widow?" Her answer was simply, "The first fifty years!" Join us in prayer for America's women who are alone.

Charter a Group

The Office of the Chancellor will CHARTER new groups at the local church, city, district, and regional levels. This is a ministry that must move forward. God has commanded that WIDOWS be supported and the nature of current society requires that WOMEN ALONE be included in Oxford's prayerful concern and support. If you are interested in a CHARTER, call 1 800-933-6188 or send us names of WIDOWS or WOMEN ALONE.

Program for Widows and Women Alone with guidance on health, housing, and family issues.

As the population ages, this sector of society is growing. The needs are many and Social Security alone does not provide the human support element missing with detachment from a nuclear family. This program will develop volunteer work crews as a last resort effort for home repairs, transportation for groceries, appointments, etc. for women who do not have access to such services. The Centre will charter groups in churches and civic organizations to participate in the Widows and Women Alone project. This project will function similar to a "habitat for humanity" effort, but be directed to the needs of women alone.
